Paddy provided some coffee/tea and light snacks while he showed us some fossils that had washed up on the beach. (Un)Fortunately, since there was so much of a hold up with folks tipping into the water, we didn’t go out as far as people typically do on the tour but we were out just far enough to enjoy a gorgeous view of Croagh Patrick (which Melissa, her boyfriend, Naima, and Niko were in the process of climbing) and a brief swim. Paddy, our instructor, was incredibly thorough and made sure we were all physically and mentally prepared for the tour he showed us how to paddle forward, backward, turn and how to pop out of the closed-top kayak should we capsize.įortunately out of the 3/5 people who lost balance and were temporarily sacrificed to the Gods of Clew Bay (ha!), I was not one of them! The closed-top kayaks are much more difficult to balance than what I’m used to, so I consider myself lucky! One rogue wave or mis-paddle, and it’s easy to tip over. When I got to the bike shop at the quay, there were two other couples planning to kayak as well. 10 out of 10 experience.I officially completed the Clew Bay Bike Hire Adventure Challenge! After cycling the greenway, climbing Croagh Patrick, and finally kayaking Clew Bay, I was awarded a “free” t-shirt from the company! Since the three components of the challenge were things I was interested in doing anyway, the t-shirt (and discounted prices for cycling and kayaking with the same company) were worth it for me.Īlthough the weather leading up to the day I signed up to kayak was a bit touch-and-go, I was happy to enjoy a particularly beautiful day in Westport that was perfect for kayaking. I know its always going to be a topic brought up at every family gathering. Special thanks to Nigel too that was brilliant helping our with the kayaking session and delivering our takeaway by boat! For example they went out of their way to get an extra takeaway for one of our family members that had dietary requirements. If I have not sold this to you already as the perfect getaway for a big group there must be something wrong.Ĭiaran and his team went above and beyond to make sure our stay was perfect. A few final jumps off the pier into the sea, our takeaway was delivered by boat for us all to enjoy before a few drinks around the camp fire for our last evening. We spend the rest of the day lounging in the sun, enjoying the massive hot tub and hiking to the viewpoint. Ciaran made it super fun by including challenges throughout and taking us around the bay. The next morning we had an amazing kayaking session which is a must do. After that we moved onto a few drinks with chats and games in the cocktail bar area and personnel pub! It was a late night to say the least. I would never leave the island if I lived there.įirstly, we started our evening with a family BBQ. Everything was amazing! I'm surprised Ciaran actually rents it out and just doesnt keep it to himself to live. Just to firstly note that the island was well beyond our expectations (even though I had very high expectations in the first place). I organised the stay for my extended family (Ages 11 plus) for a two night weekend trip in July. Take the reins as the family social committee and Ciaran will not let you down. Well no need to put off the family gathering, reunion with friends, stag/hen any longer. We got used to our own company and skipping the annual gathering. Be honest! We have all been putting off catching up with family and friends since covid.
